Check out what’s in store this month:

LJR Elections

It’s that time of year when we are looking for a new Jr. LJR! If you’re a youth who’s interested in leadership, planning activities, and meeting new people, then the LJR role is for you! Any JBer is eligible to run in the election for LJR.  We will be having elections for the new Jr. LJR at our next JB meeting on March 7th. There will be a Q&A session with the LJR candidate(s) and then a voting period. All JBers are allowed and highly encouraged to vote!

Movie Night

In recognition of International Women’s Day, join our Junior Branch for a screening of Girl Rising, a documentary that follows nine girls from different parts of the world showing how they are overcoming great obstacles to obtain an education and change their fates. Following the film we’ll be having a group discussion led by Steering.

We encourage you to bring a friend to movie night! Feel free to wear pjs, bring a stuffed animal and get comfortable. Snacks will be available for purchase to munch on during the movie. Parents are welcome to stay to watch the film as well.

About Girl Rising:

The film spotlights unforgettable girls like Sokha, an orphan who rises from the dumps of Cambodia to become a star student and an accomplished dancer; Suma, who composes music to help her endure forced servitude in Nepal and today crusades to free others; and Ruksana, an Indian “pavement-dweller” whose father sacrifices his own basic needs for his daughter’s dreams. Each girl is paired with a renowned writer from her native country. Edwidge Danticat, Sooni Taraporevala, Aminatta Forna and others tell the girls’ stories, each in its unique style, and all with profound resonance. These girls are each unique, but the obstacles they faced are ubiquitous.

Like the 130 million girls around the world who dream of going to school, what Sokha, Suma, Ruksana and the rest want most is to be students: to learn. And now, by sharing their personal journeys, they have become teachers. Watch Girl Rising, and you will see: One girl with courage is a revolution.

Subject warning: some of the segments deal with intense and disturbing topics including slavery, child marriage, rape, and human trafficking. There are matter-of-fact discussions of these issues, but nothing graphic is shown.
